Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte 2018 Pessac-Leognan Grand Cru Classe

Short Description

Château Smith-Haut-lafitte is a Cru Classé des Graves.

Among the owners whose chronology dates back to 1365 we find Georges Smith who bought the Château in the 18th century, gave it his name and built the Chartreuse.

The vineyard which extends over 55 hectares is located on a croup of gravels with the double peculiarity which consists on the one hand in offering an optimal drainage of the soil which forces the roots to seek the mineral salts at more than 6 meters of depth. on the one hand and on the other hand which serves as a mirror of the sun's rays, favorable to the ripening and optimal development of the bunches of grapes.

The average age of the vines is 38 years.

The production is twofold:

Red on 44 hectares with Cabernet Sauvignon for 59%, Merlot noir for 30%, Cabernet franc 10% and Petit Verdot 1%.

White on 11 hectares with Sauvignon grapes for 90%, Sémillon 5%, Sauvignon gris 5%.

The average annual production is 142 barrels for the reds, ie 160 to 180,000 bottles and 43 to 46,000 bottles for the whites.

The harvest is entirely manual and the red wine is aged for 70% in new barrels for 18 to 20 months and for 50% of new barrels 50% of one-year barrels for white wine for 12 months.

The cooperage is integrated into the vineyard.
