Nikka is one of Japan's largest and most influential whisky producers. Founder Masataka Taketsuru, after studying in Scotland around 1920, brought the necessary knowledge to Japan that continues to shape the industry today. Nikka owns several distilleries: Yoichi on Hokkaido in northern Japan, opened in 1934, and Miyagikyo on the main island of Honshu, near Sendai, which went into production in 1969. Nikka produces a variety of styles at its distilleries, most notably single malt whiskies along Scottish lines.
