Enriched. .A no saturated fat food. Grain Group. Make half your grains whole. Source: US Department of Agriculture. The Food Guide Pyramid: The pyramid is an outline of what to eat each day. It's not a rigid prescription, but a general guide developed by the US Department of Agriculture that lets you choose a healthful diet that's right for you. The Pyramid calls for eating a variety of foods to get the nutrients you need and at the same time the right amount of calories to maintain a healthy weight. To Begin Building A Healthy Diet: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides this advice for those two years of age or older: 1. Eat a variety of foods to get the energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber you need for good health. 2. Maintain healthy weight to reduce your chances of having high blood pressure, heart disease, a stroke, certain cancers, and the most common kinds of diabetes. 3. Choose a diet low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. Because fat contains over twice the calories of an equal amount of carbohydrates or protein, a diet low in fat can help you maintain a healthy weight. 4. Choose a diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits and grain products which provide needed victims, minerals fiber and complex carbohydrates, and can help you lower your intake of fat. 5. Use sugars only in moderation. A diet with lots of sugars has too many calories and too few nutrients for most people. 6. Use salt and sodium only in moderation. 7. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation. Alcoholic beverages supply calories, but little or no nutrients. Drinking alcohol is also the cause of many health problems and accidents.
