Ginseng has been known in Europe for centuries. The export of this root was forbidden by the Asian countries. Korean ginseng, Panax ginseng, is a member of the Aralia family. This is a small perennial shrub that develops slowly and only flowers in its third year. This root grows only one centimeter a year; the older it gets, the better the quality. Therefore, one should not reap the roots before the lapse of six years. The best ginseng grows in the wild on the mineral-rich mountain soils of Korea and Manchuria. But wild ginseng is scarce and expensive, which is why it has been cultivated in China since the 12th century on plantations.

The positive effects of ginseng have now been "well researched, even in reputable US studies," says Rampp. In 2007, researchers at the Mayo Clinic presented a study to 282 cancer patients at the annual convention of the American Cancer Society in Chicago, which also made school doctors prick up their ears. Thereafter, the fatigue syndrome described as fatigue, which affects 90 percent of cancer patients and for which there is currently no effective therapy, was significantly reduced by taking ginseng in daily doses of 1000 milligrams after eight weeks.

One year earlier, a study of 1,455 breast cancer patients concluded that ginseng users had a lower risk of death and enjoyed a higher quality of life. Several questionnaire studies from the 1990s also concluded that ginseng users are less likely to develop cancer. Even a critical mind, such as Bremen-based drug expert Professor Gerd Glaeske, acknowledged that "one could" "follow up" the preventive effects of ginseng.

Whether the ginseng works or not, is mainly due to the quality. In supermarkets, there is a lot of ineffective ginseng, which conjures up the call of useless hocus pocus root. The problem: Ginseng is not yet standardized to a specific compound, such as St. John's wort.
