Many or all of the products featured here can be from partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influencer our evaluations. Our opinions are our own.

Donat Mg might not be mineral water that you've heard of. We will tell you everything about it. In osteoporosis, the body needs calcium and the supply of mineral water is a good way to cover the need. Some studies show that the bioavailability of calcium from mineral water is as good as that of milk. Mineral water offers advantages in osteoporosis that need to be considered - we want to take a closer look at this topic.

Water and minerals

Why mineral water? Some people buy mineral water because it tastes good and quenches their thirst, or others because they need it: whether for cooking or to satisfy a mineral need. Of course, it's not just a lot of minerals - for many people, it's about including the right ones in their diet. The last point mentioned is the one that interests us. Osteoporosis requires a continuous supply of calcium and mineral water can be a good source of this mineral.

Mineral water is a natural product

It is well known that mineral water is a natural product and comes from an underground water deposit well protected from contamination and mineral water is a recognized foodstuff. And most of us know that mineral water is so-called because it is obtained from deep layers of rock where it is enriched with minerals and therefore contains a correspondingly high amount of minerals. Mineral water contains many minerals - usually more than tap water. Every water (more precisely, every mineral water source) has its own mineral composition, which in turn not only provides the taste but can also compensate for possible deficiencies in nutrition with the minerals it contains.

In mineral water, various minerals are of possible importance for the organism: calcium, magnesium, sodium or hydrogen carbonate - there are a number more minerals, these four are the most important ones for us here.

On average, every German drink about 120-140 liters of mineral water per year. This makes the drink a popular thirst quencher. But what many people do not know: Water differs not only in price but also in its mineral content. This is indicated on the bottle label. This makes it easy to tell whether water is particularly low in sodium, for example, and thus suitable for preparing baby food, or whether it is particularly rich in calcium and suitable for supporting the calcium balance.

Anyone who is particularly active at work or during leisure time and sweats a lot needs fluids and minerals. Mineral water is therefore not only a good thirst quencher, but also healthy. Above all, senior citizens also need many minerals, as the need increases with age. If you want mineral-rich water, you should make sure you drink at least 1500 milligrams of minerals per liter. A close look at the label is worthwhile to find the right water.

Mineral water containing calcium

If mineral water contains a lot of calcium, at least 150 mg calcium/liter, it may bear the indication 'calcium-containing'. Mineral water with a lot of calcium supports the body in the supply of minerals via the stomach, intestines, and blood circulation in the direction of the bones and is helpful in the treatment of osteoporosis. It also reduces a deficiency that can manifest itself in symptoms such as tooth, hair, and nail damage, or even heart rhythm disturbances.

Those who avoid dairy products should compensate for the mineral intake by other means. Especially vegans and people with lactose intolerance could, therefore, benefit from mineral water with plenty of calcium. In addition, this is a very important mineral for women: The VDH (Verband Deutsche Heilbrunnen) points out, among other things, an increased need during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and during and after menopause. An adult should consume about 800 milligrams of calcium daily (according to the GDE).

The natural calcium in mineral water is well absorbed and utilized by the body, i.e. it is characterized by good bioavailability* (at least equal to the availability of calcium from vegetables).

Mineral water as an alternative to milk and dairy products

Mineral water as an alternative to milk and dairy products: they are not only energy-free but also guarantee a reliable supply of calcium. The results of various studies on the supply of mineral water (also applies to heal water) are convincing and speak for the importance of mineral-rich water in the prophylaxis and therapy of deficiencies. The bioavailability of calcium from natural mineral waters has been proven to be at least as good as that of milk and dairy products - some studies even show it to be better*.

Particularly in the case of osteoporosis, it is important to ensure a sufficient supply of calcium - this mineral is an important building block for our bones to make them dense, firm, and resilient. As far as incorporation into the bone is concerned, exercise, and sufficient load through physical activity is crucial, as regular stress on the body and especially on the bones stimulates the production of bone mass.

If mineral water with calcium is to be used to partially cover the daily requirement, it is advisable to ensure a content of at least 250 mg per liter - then you have already achieved half the daily requirement with 2 liters. In our mineral water table, we show some mineral waters with 500 mg/l ... that is quite a lot and covers half the daily requirement with one liter.

In the context of osteoporosis prevention, mineral water is an ideal supplier of calcium, as the whole discussion about phosphate (" calcium predators") is unnecessary. This is because a high intake of phosphate worsens calcium absorption (intake) - which is why it is also recommended to limit the consumption of phosphate-rich foods, whereby phosphate is contained in many foods. Not in mineral water.

The importance of magnesium

Magnesium, like all minerals and trace elements, belongs to the essential nutrients.

This means that the human organism needs magnesium, but cannot produce it itself. The daily magnesium requirement must, therefore, be covered by diet.

The human need for magnesium increases, particularly during sporting activities. This makes it all the more important to ensure a sufficient supply of magnesium from food. Mineral water containing magnesium (Donat Mg) offers an optimal supplement here.

What is the daily requirement?

Decisive factors for the number of daily requirements are age, gender, and lifestyle. In general, the German Nutrition Society recommends a daily intake of 350 to 400 mg for young people between 15 and 18 years of age. For adults, the daily magnesium requirement is 375 mg. However, due to their larger muscle and bone mass, men need a little more, as do people who do a lot of sport, do heavy physical work, and/or are exposed to regular stress. Women in pregnancy and while breastfeeding also has an increased need for magnesium.

Why mineral water (Donat Mg) is seen as a supplier of magnesium

With magnesium-rich mineral water (Donat Mg) you can easily ensure your optimal magnesium supply. In contrast to solid foods, the mineral is already present in dissolved form and can, therefore, be optimally absorbed and utilized by the body. A tip: If the mineral water (Donat Mg) is drunk with meals, the magnesium can be absorbed and utilized by the body even better, i.e. bioavailability is increased even further.

What are the signs of a magnesium deficiency?

There are several symptoms that you can look for to see if drinking Magnesium Rich Mineral Water (Donat Mg) could benefit you by boosting your magnesium levels.

Low levels of magnesium have also been associated with higher levels of depression as well as heightened feelings of anxiety.

An increased risk of osteoporosis is another risk that is posed when there is a deficiency of magnesium. This deficiency might make the bones grow weaker while also lowering the levels of calcium in the blood that your bones need to be healthy. As for the muscles, they may experience greater levels of weakness and fatigue.

Take in sufficient magnesium through Donat Mg

A healthy diet plays a key role in the absorption of minerals: the diet can ensure the supply of magnesium. As with calcium, the supply of magnesium to the body must be ensured on an ongoing basis.

Magnesium intake through food

But is it necessary to take dietary supplements in the form of tablets or dragées to cover his daily magnesium requirements? In many foods, we consume the minerals calcium & magnesium are present. Foods rich in magnesium include nuts, milk, and wholemeal products. However, there are big differences in how well the organism can actually use the minerals in the food.
